Computer Ethics
According to Britannica ethics is 'the discipline concerned with what is morally good and bad and morally right and wrong. The term is also applied to any system or theory of moral values or principles' (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2023).
It surely has to be applied in the field of computing. As computer technology evolves, computer ethics studies how to deal with ethical dilemmas and ethical issues arising from its use. Technology ethics involves determining appropriate guidelines and principles for using technology responsibly and ethically. It also involves understanding and analysing the impact of technology on individuals, society, and the environment. Computer ethics applies to a wide range of moral dilemmas, including privacy issues, intellectual property rights, cybersecurity, information access, the social implications of technology, and the moral application of AI. It puts into question the responsible and moral development, implementation, and use of computer systems and technology. The terms 'computer crime' and 'computer theft' is wildly hearable and everybody should take responsibility for educating themselves on the subject as there is a law regulating it. However, there are problems with the code of computer ethics as there aren't correct legal system guidelines for moral behaviour.
Some key areas of computer ethics include:
- privacy
We may think that popping to our colleagues to see what she or he has done or written may not be so innocent as one would imagine. Everything that has been done online should be treated as somebody's private content. It should not be used against that person in any way without consent. Everybody's privacy should be respected in the same way as we would like everybody to respect ours.
- security
- Intellectual property
- Social and Moral Implications
Computer ethics promote the use of computers and technology in a responsible manner. It motivates people, groups, and decision-makers to think about the ethical implications of technology and work toward morally upright and socially responsible results.
